Super scooper
Over the years I've tried to teach my family the correct portion sizes for various foods. When my boys were little, I controlled the amount on their high chair tray or plate, but not anymore.
Teenage boys don't care about portion sizes, they just know that they're hungry...very hungry...all the time. Watching them scoop ice cream into a bowl almost gives me a heart attack as I mentally count how many grams of fat are accumulating in the bowl. The ice cream has 130 calories and 7 grams of fat per serving. Scooping out what seems like a normal amount of ice cream to them is actually about 4 servings. That's 520 calories and 28 grams of fat. Whoa!
The serving size for ice cream is usually half a cup or 4 ounces. To help my kids visualize the amount, I scooped ice cream into a ½ cup measure and plopped it into a bowl. It looks about the size of a tennis ball. Next time you eat ice cream, check your serving size. Are you a super scooper, too?
